Hi, again!
I recently took a bit of time away from this blog for a big move that took a lot of time out of my schedule. I’m going to skip sharing the boring details about my move and instead I’ll jump back in to talk about my latest project. The graphic novel I want to write!
I’ll start off with the sad news. I am choosing to back away from the idea of a graphic novel series. There are a few reasons behind my decision to step away from this form of writing.
First, I want to have several stories featured in this series. It’s not only going to be about one character and his life. It’s going to be about one character and the projects he takes on for other couples. Those couples will be my main focus in each book. Turning these stories into graphic novels will take up a lot of time. I don’t think a single person should take something this big on alone. This fact leads me into my second reason for stepping away from my original plan.
The second reason is not having a team to help me out. A lot of graphic novel creators do not complete their series entirely by themselves. Of course, I could reach out to search for more help, but I don’t want to risk reaching out and having someone completely change my plans for the series. I’m easily manipulated and they could rip the story right out from under me without me noticing. I’m not ready to give other people that kind of trust with my own work. Some might see this as rude or selfish, but I’ll do what I have to do to protect my work. I’m sure you would do the same.
Finally, I believe my story will be easier to understand if it’s written in the style of a chapter novel. I applaud all creators able to take a complex story and turn it into a beautiful graphic novel series. I am amazed by all the series I have read and lost myself inside. I do believe I could write my series well enough through graphic novels, but I feel like it would take a lot of time to get all of the important points across. If one detail takes a whole book to address then the readers won’t find the story interesting. I don’t want to hold back bringing this series to life much longer.
It’s going to take some time to get all the matters sorted on the direction I’m taking my story, but I promise you it will get there. With a bit of help from some research and other series I have read I know this task will be possible. I hope you hang around so you can keep up with what’s going on in my work.
Have you ever had to walk away from a big plan? Why did that happen and how did you handle it?
